On our way back from Zell am See this Easter we visited the German Shore of Lake Constance or Baden See if you are in Germany. The lake borders Austria, Switzerland, and Germany with Lichtenstein also being part of this Four country Region. Lake Constance is the 3rd largest body of water in Europe and encompasses 270 km of shoreline. We found it remarkable to sit by the lake in Germany and be able to see the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss and Austrian alps in the distance. There is something magical about being in one country and see two others in the distance, all while enjoying a hot cuppa and local delicacies. On the Switzerland side of the lake visitors can go on a cable car up to the Säntis Mountain observation deck where on clear days you can see six different countries; Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Lichtenstein!
Lake Constance is encircled by Europe’s most popular cycling route, the Lake Constance Cycle Path. One can set off from Germany, have lunch in Switzerland and have afternoon tea in Austria. It is a stunning route along the glistening water surrounded by meadows, orchards and vineyards that seem to come tumbling down the hillsides towards the water. Scattered around the lake are old towns, castles, quaint medieval villages, and beautiful gardens. This makes for such a pleasant view and atmosphere to enjoy whether you choose to stroll, hike, cycle, mountain bike, drive or you can even enjoy it from a relaxing boat ride. The hills and forests surrounding the lake are zigzagged with hiking trails for both leisurely walks and more challenging hikes. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy.
We must admit we enjoy a touch of birdwatching and there are birds galore to be spotted in their natural habitat or you can make your way to exploration centres to learn more about the local birdlife and habitats.
We personally prefer to stay on the lakeside beaches enjoying the local wines, foods and sights while making our way along the lake.
The vineyards are something else and the most beautiful sites above Lake Constance traditionally belong to the vineyards which have shaped the landscape and its inhabitants for centuries. The area is famous for its white wines although more red wine grapes are now yielded, all made possible from the special climatic conditions produced by the Lake. The white wine definitely has our seal of approval. Wine festivals are held in all regions during late summer and into autumn where you can taste all the different wines and taste the local specialities like fish and fine cheese. Wine festivals make a good opportunity to experience local music and various entertainments. All regions around the lake are rich with culture where artists of all kinds have felt at home which makes art and architecture an integral part of its tradition.
This is a fabulous trip for adults with visits to vineyards, museums, music festivals and UNESCO World Heritage sites. It would also make a great school trip for children with focus on geography and culture.
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the region comes highly recommended by us,
Julie and Wayne
